Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise for you. It is not hard on your body and your joints like running is (read low impact). Also, it is not only great cardiovascular exercise but builds great lean muscle. Therefore it makes sense that a health conscious person would want easy access to a lap pool. Well for those of you who don't want to buy a gym membership there are many great options for having a lap pool right at your home.

Above ground lap pools: These pools have many benefits. They are small usually about 7 ft by 28 ft by 7ft. These lap pools are also not going to break the bank usually costing around $2500 and can be purchased at many different locations. Furthermore, they are also portable, meaning they can be moved around with the seasons or from house to house. Although it is recommended that they are relocated as little as possible. On the down side they are fairly small and are not meant to be used for recreation. They also come in only one shape, rectangular, and are not usually overly aesthetically pleasing. However, they are a great idea for someone with limited space and means.

Indoor lap pools: By this I mean an in ground indoor pool. This is possibly the most expensive option, but also one of the most desirable. Indoor pools are usually smaller than a standard public rectangular pool, usually measuring 10ft wide or less. However, they can be used year round for both exercise and recreation or entertaining. Some people even add bar stools inside the pool. Also, remember the addition of any kind of pool will only increase the value of your home. The cost of an indoor lap pool will vary greatly depending on your location, the size of the pool, what kind of structure you want to build around it and other factors.

Fiber Glass Lap Pools: These are another type of in-ground lap pools. Fiber glass is one of the most desirable finishes for a pool for several reasons. It has a smooth surface. This is important as you will be touching the surface frequently as you swim back and forth and want to avoid cuts and scrapes. Fiber glass will also typically result in lower maintenance and energy costs as it will not have to be resurfaced like a cement pool.

Vinyl lap pool: This is a specific type of the previously discussed above ground lap pool. Vinyl is a good medium because it is easy to clean and light-weight. As with all above ground pools they are portable. With the money you save by using an inexpensive above ground pool you could even install a wooden deck to make it more aesthetically pleasing.

Lastly, lap pool dimensions are important. You not only want to ensure that you, and whoever else is planning on using the pool have enough room to get a proper work out, but you also want to make sure that you pool follows code. Many neighborhoods have codes which dictate where a pool must be located in the yard among other things. Therefore, before installing a pool, do your research.
